Benefits to business . . .
There has been an increase in the amount of businesses that are investing in solar PV in recent years, as owners switch on to the benefits it provides to commercial premises. Generally many businesses have much more roof space than domestic premises so have the capacity for much larger systems. Although this means a slightly reduced feed-in tariff rate, the payback on these systems is still incredibly high with a 20% ROI easily achievable. The larger the system, the cheaper the price per Watt. The main benefit for some businesses is that they are using large quantities of electricity and with solar PV they would be using much more of their own generated power than is achievable on domestic premises. In fact some commercial premises can consume 100% of the power that is generated.
The regulations in the UK allow to put up to 10 kWp power on a 3 phase electricity supply without asking permission from the DNO (electricity district network operator). Larger systems of greater than 4Kw per phase would require written permission which takes approximately 30 days from the application date.
There are many different types of roof on commercial premises from flat roofs with a membrane seal to corrugated and standing seem types. Fortunately, there are also many options to install on these various roof types and with the use of triangular supports often a much more optimum angle is achievable than the existing roof slope.
